Nordic Clinic was established in 2002 to focus on selected health problems utilising a Functional Medicine model. Functional Medicine is a well-documented treatment method emanating from the USA. The model works to understand from a biochemical assessment the underlying causes of a patient’s condition. Rather than only treating the symptom the aim is to identify and treat the cause. Patients suffering from chronic long-term debilitating health issues will often get tremendous relief from a Functional Medicine intervention.
Functional Medicine combines many different disciplines within medicine and lifestyle and how they interact with each other. It can assess our genetic strengths and weaknesses, addresses nutritional status that impacts the biochemistry, aiding or hindering the body’s performance on a day to day basis. Each individual is unique, and the combination of lifestyle factors can have very different effects on each person.
For example, our energy levels can be impacted by many factors ranging from nutrient deficiencies to infection, poor sleep, lack of movement and stress. We can develop migraines from food, stress, environmental toxins and other triggers. IBS can be caused by bacterial overgrowth, poor thyroid function, or parasites. Heart disease risk can be increased by genetics, lipoproteins, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. These are just some examples of different causes of common patient complaints – our aim is to uncover what are the causes behind your symptoms and disease risk.
The Nordic Clinic approach: The strategy involves utilising laboratory analysis to gain a picture of the biochemical disturbance, then implementing dietary interventions including the addition of food supplements, as well as lifestyle changes, and where necessary the utilisation of medical treatment. All with the aim of removing strains and imbalances in the body, whilst adding missing nutrients and supporting the body’s own functions.
The treatment is adapted to the individual so the approach becomes individualised.
The patients that Nordic Clinic consult with can be split into three broad groups:
- Health optimisation and longevity (how to age best)
- Performance (eg physical performance (sports, or focus on energy levels), mental performance (eg school, work or sports)
- Chronic illness and difficult symptoms
Health Ownership: The mission of Nordic Clinic is to help transfer health ownership back to the patient, so that they understand more about how they function and adapt accordingly. Our aim is to provide patients’ with the tools they need to ensure they can manage their health and wellbeing.
Therapist and patient
The clinic’s doctors and therapists have a high level of professional competence and experience. Our team continuously participates in relevant professional education in Europe and the USA, so we are always at the forefront of new knowledge. The team likes to walk the talk including a Functional Medicine approach in their own lifestyle, and can therefore provide guidance based on evidence-based knowledge, clinical excellence and personal experiences.
Collaborators
Nordic Clinic uses state-of-the-art laboratories in both Europe and the USA to analyze a wide range of useful tests. Allowing us to hone in on the correct diagnosis and treatment. Based on those results, and the clinical assessment, it allows our team to recommend the most well-documented, but also clinically best medicines (both pharma and herbal) and dietary supplements, in order to achieve the greatest possible effect in the treatment.
Credible science
In recent decades there have been tremendous advancements in medical science and treatment. In western medicine, the focus is mostly on treating symptoms, while in Functional Medicine the focus is on personal and individual treatment of underlying causes e.g. rather than just giving paracetamol for a headache, our aim is to understand what is triggering and causing the headache symptoms, and address it there. We aim to create a strong link between ordinary medical treatment and targeted nutrition and lifestyle. This is done through an individually tailored treatment with a focus on the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.
